What is ACL reconstruction?
As the term implies, it is a reconstruction and not a repair. Although repair could be done in some rare cases, reconstruction is the GOLD standard. It involves, replacing the torn ACL ligament with a tendon either of your own or an allograft (from tissue bank). The common graft the surgeon uses is your own hamstring graft.
Do I need the surgery?
Surgery is usually recommended for people who would like o return to active sports. It is also recommended if you have had a meniscus tear and an ACL tear at the same time.
What are the alternatives?
Physiotherapy is a very helpful alternative and most young adults might be able to live a normal life without the need for a surgery
How is it performed?
Performed as a day case surgery under general anaesthetic, your surgeon shall discuss the graft choice and the type of metal/ screw that shall be used. Your hamstrings shall be harvested from the same leg with an incision of around 5-7 cms below the knee. The rest of the procedure is performed arthroscopically. The procedure takes around 1-2 hours depending on the complexity and any additional procedures that might be necessary. You shall be helped by the physiotherapist on the same day to walk. Further sessions of physiotherapy shall be arranged before your discharge.
What are the risks?

- Bleeding
- Infection
- DVT/PE (clots in leg and chest)
- Nerve injury

- Graft failure
