Is core decompression successful?
If done at the right stage (early stage), it has shown to postpone the need for a more major surgery in upto 79% of cases. One should also note that core decompression is a reversible surgery.
What is core decompression?
Performed in early stages of AVN, as the name implies, it is a procedure wherein the surgeon cores out the central part of the femoral head, through a small cut on the outer side of your hip. The dead bone is removed and this gives a chance for reduction of pressure in the bone and hence aiding in new bone formation.
How long will I be in hospital?
It is usually performed as a day case surgery, however some patients might need overnight admission.
What are the risks?
Please discuss with the surgeon, about your specific condition. Apart from the usual risks of any major surgery, one of the risk is ‘no benefit’ of the procedure itself.
