Ingrowing toe nail

What can I do?

In diabetics and some patients, it could lead to severe complications. Hence early intervention is desirable.

Regular trimming of the toe nails, sometimes filing the edges or even using wide toe box shoes help. The idea is to avoid overgrowth of the toe nail and avoid undue friction to the surrounding skin. You can also soak your feet in lukewarm water and soap, followed by application of any antiseptic (if there is skin breach)

I have done all these, but still it is painful

It is likely that it could have progressed to a stage that it might need a surgical input

Mr Janipireddy shall examine your toes and also take a detailed history. Depending on your circumstances, he could offer a partial nail removal or a complete nail removal.

Is it a successful surgery?

Yes, in majority of cases. The surgeon shall inject your base of big toe and shall perform the surgery. It usually takes around 30-45 min altogether. Some patients prefer a general anaesthetic. It is a day surgery and you are given a special shoe to walk home.

What are the risks?

There are usually minimal risks. One of the risks could be a repeat surgery for recurrence.
