Hip Pain

More and more young adults are now experiencing hip pain significant enough needing medical attention. Thanks to the diagnostic tools and advancement that surgeons have been able to pin point the reasons for the hip pain at an early stage. It is however, important to realise that not all pain at the groin are related to hip.

Hip pain can cause discomfort at the groin, upper thigh, and front of your thigh or even at the knee. It rarely presents as pain below the knee

Some of the conditions you might have heard or your doctor would have mentioned are as listed below:

  • Muscular: such as abductor muscle or gluteal muscle tears
  • Nerve compressions: Piriformis or obturator syndrome, Meralgia paresthetica
  • Tendons: Snapping tendon
  • Bursitis: trochanteric bursites
  • Bone: Impingement, deformed head of femur due to childhood condition,arthritis, AVN (avascular necrosis)
  • Soft tissue: labral tears

Hip Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (natural wear & tear of cartilage) is one of the most common causes of hip pain. It is also the commonest reason why you or your GP would have asked for a surgical opinion. It is characterised by pain and stiffness in the groin, sometimes referred to thigh or even knee. You could see gradual deterioration over the years and could affect your quality of life and activities of daily living.

Other causes le ding to rapid deterioration of hip arthritis could be:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Secondary arthritis (commonest being AVN)
